Just a day after crews removed the Kmart sign atop the city’s first national big-box store, the same procedure was carried out at a nearby shopping center as Mt. Pleasant bid adieu to Family Dollar.

Word had started to circulate in December, at the same time Kmart’s planned closing was announced, that the days were also numbered for Family Dollar, located in another strip mall further south on Mission.

On Tuesday, longtime store manager David Patterson shared photos of the sign’s removal as local residents reminisced on the Mt. Pleasant Townie Talk page on Facebook.

Patterson himself, said: “Thank you Mt. Pleasant for your support for the last 25 years that Family Dollar was part of your community.”

Patterson said the store is empty, all stock and fixtures having been sold, re-purposed or scrapped.

Others said:

• Christy McPhall: “Going to really miss you guys. Good luck in all you do, Dave.”

• Dawn Harless: “I didn’t know this was closing. Too much focus on Kmart and left this one out.”

• Melissa Moss-Bayduk: “Will miss you all. Family Dollar was a single mom’s dream come true. An easy in and out store for the busy person. Staff extremely friendly. You will be missed.”

• Kelli Artibee: “I’m sorry to see this happening. Good luck to all the employees and thank you for your service.”

• Dawn Drews: “Favorite place to shop; always friendly faces.”

• Marilyn Keene: “Wow, can’t believe the old place is gone. Sad to see it gone.”

• Machelle Keels: “Kmart is now gone – two icons in a month.”
